Boats on the clear Umngot River at Dawki, Meghalaya

5-Day Meghalaya Itinerary from Guwahati: Shillong, Cherrapunji & Dawki

A 5-day Meghalaya itinerary from Guwahati works well when you want Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki in one trip without turning every day into a race. The key is to choose a sensible route, keep arrival and departure days realistic, and decide early whether your group wants a demanding trek or gentler sightseeing.

This suggested plan combines four nights in Meghalaya with a Guwahati pickup and return. It is a starting point for a private journey, rather than a promise that every attraction or activity will operate on your dates.

Your five-day route at a glance

Day Suggested plan Overnight
1 Guwahati → Umiam Lake → Shillong Shillong
2 Shillong → Cherrapunji viewpoints and waterfalls Sohra / Cherrapunji
3 A relaxed Sohra day, or an optional Nongriat trek Sohra / Cherrapunji
4 Mawlynnong and Dawki → Shillong Shillong
5 Shillong → Guwahati departure Departure

The order can change with weather, your arrival time and accommodation availability. If you prefer fewer hotel changes, ask us to compare this route with a Shillong-based version of our five-day Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki tour.

Day 1: Guwahati to Shillong via Umiam Lake

Start with a pickup at Guwahati airport, railway station or your hotel. Allow the first day to be a transfer day with a scenic break, rather than fitting in a full sightseeing circuit after a late arrival. Umiam Lake is on the Guwahati–Shillong approach and makes a natural introduction to Meghalaya’s hill scenery.

After checking in at Shillong, choose a short local outing only if your arrival leaves enough time. Keep dinner and the evening flexible. Tell the travel team your actual flight or train timing before agreeing the pickup plan; a very early or late connection may justify an extra night in Guwahati.

Day 2: Shillong to Cherrapunji’s waterfalls and caves

Travel towards Sohra, also known as Cherrapunji, with a manageable selection of viewpoints and waterfall stops. Nohkalikai Falls and the region’s cave experiences are well-known options, but visibility, opening arrangements and walking requirements should guide the final selection. A shorter list of worthwhile stops is usually more enjoyable than collecting every viewpoint.

Carry footwear with grip and keep rain protection accessible. Discuss stairs, uneven paths and any mobility needs before departure. Our Meghalaya destination guide introduces the different experiences you can build around this part of the trip.

Day 3: Choose between a scenic day and the Nongriat trek

This is the day to match the itinerary to your group. A relaxed version can focus on accessible viewpoints, a cave visit where suitable, and time to enjoy the landscape. Families travelling with young children or anyone who wants a slower pace should avoid adding a strenuous trek simply because it appears on a standard checklist.

Nongriat’s double-decker living root bridge is an alternative for travellers prepared for a substantial descent and return climb. Meghalaya Tourism describes the approach from Tyrna as roughly 3,000 stone steps downhill. Confirm the route, local guide arrangements, weather and your group’s ability before committing. Give the trek its own day rather than combining it with a long Dawki excursion.

Day 4: Mawlynnong, Dawki and the Umngot River

Leave early enough to enjoy the journey towards Mawlynnong and Dawki without rushing the return to Shillong. Mawlynnong offers a village setting, while the Umngot River brings a different landscape to the trip. If boating is part of your plan, confirm the operating conditions, local arrangements and quoted inclusions separately.

The famous clear-water photographs are seasonal, not a year-round guarantee. Meghalaya Tourism identifies winter as a particularly good period for clear river water. Recent rain can change the colour, visibility and activity conditions, so plan for the real experience on your travel dates rather than expecting a photograph to repeat exactly.

Day 5: Return to Guwahati with a departure buffer

Plan the final transfer around your departure, with allowance for traffic and an unhurried airport or railway-station arrival. Do not use this day for a long extra excursion before a tight connection. If your group wants more Shillong sightseeing, discuss a later departure or an additional night when the itinerary is being prepared.

When should you plan a Meghalaya trip?

Your priorities matter more than one universal “best” month. Post-monsoon visits can combine greener landscapes with improving visibility, while winter is often chosen for clearer river scenes and outdoor exploration. Rainier months can be rewarding for waterfall scenery, but heavy rain may restrict outdoor activities and change road plans. Check forecasts and local advice close to departure.

Keep a light warm layer and rain protection available even on a short trip. Choose flexible sightseeing plans, and ask what changes can be made if a viewpoint is fogbound or an activity is suspended.

What to include in your quotation request

  • Your arrival and departure timings in Guwahati.
  • The number of adults and children, plus luggage requirements.
  • Preferred hotel category, room sharing and meal requirements.
  • Whether you want a Nongriat trek or a gentler alternative.
  • Which transport, parking, entry fees, guides and activities should be included.

Compare the vehicle options in our fleet with your passenger and luggage needs. A vehicle’s name alone does not confirm its exact seating arrangement or availability. If your trip also includes Assam, explore the eight-day Assam and Meghalaya journey instead of squeezing both states into five days.

Frequently asked questions

Are five days enough for Meghalaya?

Five days can cover a focused Shillong, Sohra and Dawki route. They are not enough for every part of the state. Choose a small number of experiences and keep the plan suited to your travel timings.

Is the Nongriat trek compulsory?

No. It is an optional, physically demanding addition. A sightseeing alternative can be arranged around your group’s interests and comfort.

Will Dawki’s water always be clear?

No. River clarity depends on season and recent weather. Confirm current conditions and activity availability before travel.

Can the tour start from Guwahati airport?

Yes, you can request an airport pickup. The final plan depends on your arrival time, route, group size and vehicle availability. See our airport pickup and drop service.
